ISBN-10 to ISBN-13 Converter
Since 2007 books carry a 13 digit ISBN-13, the number in the barcode. Older books and many catalogues still use the 10 digit ISBN-10. Type either one to convert it, check its check digit, and make the barcode for the book.
An ISBN-13 starting with 978 can be turned back into an ISBN-10. Numbers starting with 979 have no ISBN-10. Hyphens and spaces are ignored. Make many book barcodes at once with the ISBN barcode generator.
How the conversion works
To go from ISBN-10 to ISBN-13, put 978 in front of the first nine digits and calculate a new check digit with the EAN rule (weights 3 and 1). The old check digit is thrown away because ISBN-10 used a different rule (modulo 11, where 10 is written X). Going back, drop the 978 and the last digit and calculate the modulo 11 check digit. See the working on the check digit calculator.
